| Tanzania offers investors a
uniquely attractive view.
For sure, Tanzania has unrivalled natural
attractions. But if you are looking for a good
investment look beyond the gloriously exotic blend
of history and culture. You will find that from
an economic standpoint, there is probably no place
in the world like Tanzania.
Present-day Tanzania is an attractive market
buoyed by stability, steady growth and solid macro
economic conditions. As this nation of 36 million
emerges steadily and surely numerous investment
opportunities in almost all sectors are surfacing.
Such vast improvements will not escape notice
for long. Neither will the returns of firms such
as Vodacom, Coca Cola, South African Breweries,
Bass Hotels and many others, who made an early
start and have now well developed businesses.
The view however is still relatively unobstructed.
There is in most cases a wide open field.
Export oriented enterprise development
is poised to take off.
Over the past 15 years phenomenal changes
in the Tanzanian business environment have occurred.
However these changes are just a drop in the ocean
compared to what is in the offing. The vision
is for Tanzania to become sustainable middle market
economy by 2025. In middle market economies 25%
of the GDP is expected to be derived from exports.
To achieve this the government has implemented
a series of initiatives designed to mobilize the
nation toward that goal. The Export Processing
Zones are one of these initiatives.
In the coming months the Tanzania Airports
Authority will transform 250 acres of unused land
at the Dar es Salaam International Airport into
the nations first Export Processing Zone. Within
the confines of this fully equipped economic incubator
will be areas for manufacturing, services and
retail. The package of incentives available to
companies operating in the EPZ is particularly
helpful. The EPZ strategy seeks to leverage what
is good and abundant in Tanzania, namely labor
and natural resources against that which is in
short supply, such as technology and capital in
order to create an attractive environment that
is stable, low cost and efficient. |
